Adoption

Under North Carolina law, an adult or child may be adopted by another adult. This process does not take place in a Court room, but rather in the office of the Clerk of Court. The process normally takes 3-6 months and may involve a home inspection by the local department of Social Services. The process for adoption is North Carolina is confidential. The process of adoption is not easy and often requires the gathering of legal documents, records and other paperwork, that if not done correctly it may result in a waste of time or resources. It may also require an in-home interview by the Department of Social Services

Adoption occurs for a variety of reasons. Foster parents may adopt children placed with them. Family members may adopt children due to an unfortunate event. Parents may adopt children of their other spouse or a variety of other reasons based on special circumstances.
